This Garden Of Grasses:

This Garden Of Grasses, Garden Setting, Asiatic Garden BeetleThis garden of grasses is planned for a plot measuring 10 by 20feet. It features 15 species or cultivars of the perennial grasses (including two tropical varieties), one bamboo, and one sedge, for a total of 17 different plants. You might think this is a small number of plants for such a large piece of ground. It isn't! The grasses take a lot of room. I went out today with a measuring tape just to make sure the height and the breadth given in the plan was correct.

The annual ornamental grasses are usually grown for their seed panicles flowers are there but they are minute and hardly noticeable many of which dry beautifully for winter bouquets. Leaves of these grasses are usually not too showy. The perennials have magnificent and varied foliage, with all shades of green, blue, and variegations of cream, white, gold, or a host of tans, in addition to notable seed heads. On the opposite page is Ravenna grass, one of the stars in the grass garden and magnificent even in a northern garden.

See Also Garden Setting:

I compromised by setting the flower in the rock garden setting during the day and moving it to the Garage at night. This did cause a bit of a problem in the morning necessitated by opening the door and all that such an act implies. Visitors to the garden setting did not know quite what to say about the giant maroon and leathery appurtenance set amid the blooming plants of the rock garden setting so they avoided all mention, which is fairly hard to do with a plant now 4 feet high and surmounted by buzzing flies.

Beware of friends' and neighbors' offerings when you are setting out a garden setting. With the best intentions in the world they will want to share with you plants from their own garden settings. Some may be well worth having and will fit into your garden setting scheme admirably, but others are likely to be invasive kinds that spread amazingly and will soon put you to work pulling them out and dumping them.

On The Other Hand See Asiatic Garden Beetle:

Grubs are the larval stage of quite different-looking mature insects. Those most common in lawns are larvae of the Japanese Beetle, Asiatic Garden Beetle, Oriental Beetle, May or June Beetle and European Chafer. Keep a sharp lookout for them. If you do not, your first knowledge of their presence may come when the grass dies in patches as though it lacked moisture and you find that you roll up the unanchored sod like a carpet. It is unanchored because its roots have been chewed off.

Mummylike appearance; all parts of adult beetle visible; appendages folded forward onto undersurface of body The adult beetle obtains air as it projects the tip of its abdomen through surface film of water. It lifts the tips of the elytra slightly, which allows air to rush under them. Fine hairs which cover the back of the beetle hold the air which can then readily be taken into the body through the spiracles or breathing pores. In this manner the beetle is able to carry a supply of air that will last for some time. Throughout United States Ponds and pools with abundant vegetation; often with predaceous water beetle; also found under electric lights on warm summer evenings
