Home With Flower Garden: You might think that cutting fresh flowers both for friends and for the home with flower gardenfront would quickly deplete our flower garden. Not so. Rather than denude various parts of our permanent flower garden to fill a vase, my wife and I have included an old Victorian idea in our garden plan: a cutting garden. We grow an abundance of annuals for color, plus a few choice perennials, all specifically grown for bouquets.
As box turtle needs plenty of room and freedom, it is best maintained as a house and garden pet. If it is to be observed at school, place it in woodland habitat of a large terrarium (see Part II); keep it for a few days and then return it to freedom of home with flower garden and garden. In home with flower garden garden in natural range, provide area in garden where pet can bury itself for hibernation during winter.See Also Attractive In Flower And Effective:Fences are of many styles. Among the most important is the picket Fence which fits so admirably with white colonial houses. These are attractive in flower and effective and effective but somewhat expensive. They need painting at fairly frequent intervals.
Split cedar fences made of cedar saplings wired closely together are attractive in flower and effective, especially for naturalistic areas, easy to install and need little upkeep. Their appearance improves with age.
There are two reasons why flower photography is a bit difficult for the amateur gardener to do himself. The first is that, to be truly effective, flower pictures must be in color, which due to its short exposure latitude demands special care in lighting. Second, for fully exploiting the beauty of flowers a good many of the pictures should be extreme close-ups which require special equipment and careful calculation of exposure factors.
On The Other Hand See Long And Flower Delightfully:The Christmas fern is a first rate evergreen kind. The barrenworts (Epi-medium) make splendid low bank covers for partial shade. They are not evergreen but hold their foliage long and flower delightfully in spring. Lily-of-the-valley and Ajuga reptans are other good winter-leaf-losing ground covers of value for part-shaded banks that are not excessively dry. Where winters are not too severe the dwarf lily-turf (Ophiopogon japonicus) and the big blue lily-turf (Liriope muscari) are excellent covers for shaded banks. The lily-turfs are evergreen.
The fragrant plantain lily (Hosta plantaginea) grows with lush, ribbed leaves, 10 inches long. In late summer to early autumn, 5-inch-long, white, very fragrant tubular flowers appear on 2-foot stems. At night the petals seem to spread and the perfume of honey fills the air. They are hardy in Zone 5 but may need a light covering on very frosty nights to protect the delicate blossoms. They make* excellent cut flower, lasting for days in a vase.
The moon flower has an entry all to itself on page 96.
