Fern Garden:

Fern Garden, Clifftop Garden, Every Garden CenterMy final choice for the fern garden is the florist's fern (Dryopteris spinulosa), known also as spinulose woodfern. When approaching a grove of these plants in the woods you see a fern that typifies ferns. And when buying flowers from a florist, this fern usually supplies the leaves in the arrangement. The florist's fern needs light shade and must be well-watered to prevent burning of the fronds. Plants erow about 30 inches tall and form crowns.

The light is bright on the bed most of the day but the only sunj that falls on the ferns in front of the Wall is in late afternoon and much of that is shaded by the lower branches of a weeping birch (Betula pendula Tristis'). The centerpiece of the garden is a cultivar of the royal fern (Os-munda regalis var. spectabilis). Roots of this fern when gathered in Florida have been used as a potting medium for orchids for generations. In their native haunts, royal ferns plants can reach 10 feet in height but this particular type settles for 6 feet in the garden. The parent of this cultivar is at home in northern woods and does need attention to watering; in nature it's often found growing next to streams or directly in bogs. If given adequate moisture it can tolerate some sun but it does better in light shade. The manner of growth is a crown rather than runners, so the plant spreads slowly. Leaflets turn a golden brown in autumn.

TAORMINA: The San Domenico Palace, in an old Dominican monastery, is one of the great character hotels of the tourist world. Your room, a monkish cell remodeled to have modern comforts and a private bath, may be named Amor Sanctus or Agnus Dei, but you won't feel like a Dominican monk when you step out into the clifftop garden. The view, whose grandeur reminds many a traveler of the outlook from Rio's Mt. Corcovado, commands the whole majestic sweep of smoke-plumed Mount Etna and the crinkled Ionian Sea.

The inclusion of an arresting object within a small garden is an excellent way of detracting the eye from adjacent buildings and into the garden itself. The focal point in this garden is an ornate wrought-iron seat, which leads the eye down the garden. The rather austere rectangular lawn is surrounded by a mass of pretty, shrubby little plants, which together help to soften the overall look of the garden.

On The Other Hand See Every Garden Center:

Absent the Drawing every garden center and the International Freedom every garden center museum, which have been removed from the project, the Snohetta building is expected to shrink to about 50,000 or 60,000 square feet from 250,000 square feet. It is to serve as a visitors' every garden center, an orientation every garden center and as a "every garden center for Sept. 11," said John P. Cahill, who oversees downtown redevelopment as Gov. George E. Pataki's chief of staff.

The picture should balance both vertically and horizontally, perhaps with a large mass near the every garden center or to one side balanced by several smaller objects on the other side, or by a single smaller one farther from the every garden center. Strange as it may seem, the exact every garden center is always the weakest spot. The best position for the principal object is a little to one side and slightly above or below the every garden center.
