Excellent Garden Barriers: Hedges make excellent garden barriers where walls and fences are undesirable. They provide a natural backdrop to other plants, and thorny hedges are effective obstacles against domestic and farm animals. Hedges can be either formal and close-clipped or informal and irregular in outline.
The inclusion of an arresting object within a small garden is an excellent way of detracting the eye from adjacent buildings and into the garden itself. The focal point in this garden is an ornate wrought-iron seat, which leads the eye down the garden. The rather austere rectangular lawn is surrounded by a mass of pretty, shrubby little plants, which together help to soften the overall look of the garden.See Also Excellent Garden Shrubs:In addition to the hardy hybrid rhododendrons there are a great many other kinds which are excellent garden shrubs, all evergreen and all disliking chalk or lime. They succeed best in loamy or peaty soils and though some will grow in full sun most prefer a partially shaded place. Many are first-class shrubs for planting in thin woodland.
Choice of plants, and their arrangement, exert an enormous influence on the amount of time needed for maintenance. The aim in a carefree garden is to make the plants themselves do as much of the work as possible. Plant shrubs that need little pruning rather than those like hybrid tea roses which require more attention.
Among herbaceous varieties, those that self-seed freely without becoming invasive are ideal in a low-maintenance garden. Ground-cover plants are perfect for filling the spaces between shrubs and give excellent weed control, provided the ground in which they are planted is completely free of perennial weeds in the first place.
On The Other Hand See Winter Garden:The majority of plants usually suggested for the winter garden are happy only when temperatures stay above 0°F. I have chosen hardier plants so my plan for a winter garden is for the majority of readers. Like the autumn garden, it is not a specific spot of ground. Rather it consists of small trees, shrubs, and a few plants to be spread about the garden, bringing welcome color to the snow and ice.
Completely bury box in garden; leave outdoors all winter. If no garden space is available, place box in a cool spot; cover with piece of glass to help retain moisture; sprinkle soil in box monthly during winter. Moths may emerge in spring even if soil has not been kept sufficiently moist through winter. However, wings will be too dry to develop, and moths will die shortly.
